welcome to growth tactics

day 1 advice for company builders

Hi there! I’m glad you’re here 😊

I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t been a founder so I’m not writing from a place of knowing exactly where you are sitting. Your journey is your own. The best I can do to support you is to share practical, actionable advice from my experiences building cross-functionally at early and late stage venture-backed companies to help you de-risk your own decisions.

So, a little bit about me:

My name is Jack and I’m a tech nerd. My life’s work is immersing myself in technology products and companies as an early adopter of consumer tech, investment banker, operator, and angel investor. I’ve worked on capital raises for companies like Checkout.com and Marqeta before joining consumer fintech Upgrade to build out their B2B go-to-market team. I’ve also served as chief of staff at SafeBase, a YC and NEA-backed sales enablement platform, where I worked cross functionally to help build the company.

I love technology because it represents the boundary of what we know and what we’re capable of. You, building in tech, are at the forefront of exploring what lies beyond that boundary, and I can’t think of a better source of continual improvement and learning.

I am so grateful to be invited to join you on the frontier.

What is growth tactics?

I chose the name growth tactics because it was the simplest way to describe the learnings I want to share with you.

“Growth” because, fundamentally, all of the decisions founders make in the early days are answers to the question “how do I want to grow?”. You could be talking about your product, team, pipeline, or cash account, but those are all growth decisions. Whatever the ask, you need to experiment with different combinations of people, process, strategy, and technology to achieve your goals.

“Tactics” because there is so much jargon surrounding the practice of starting and growing a company, and I feel that it is unnecessary. You will build your strategy on the success and failure of the in-the-moment tactical decisions you make on a hourly basis. Sometimes you learn from your own mistakes, sometimes from others’.

I’m excited to share learnings from my own tactical decision making and how the mistakes, failures and successes have driven my strategic philosophy. I hope they help you move fast in building your company.

I am by no means perfect and feedback is a gift. If you are ever willing to share feedback with me, want to dig deeper into something I write about, or think I’m dead wrong and want to tell me why, I’m always available.

Jack
